Starting a Business Healed My Depression

I haven’t always struggled with depression. It started after the birth of my third daughter in 2013. What started out as postpartum depression ended up lasting a really long time — years. It took me a while to figure out why I was feeling so down and sad. I remember feeling so hopeless for no apparent reason. This feeling was exacerbated by not being able to contribute to the family finances.
I was supposed to be enjoying motherhood, but how could I if I constantly felt so worthless? I began to feel like the only thing I was good for was making babies. Some women are proud of this, but for me, it drained my self-worth.
I’ve been a stay-at-home mom for 12 years, and I searched almost that entire time for ways to make money from home, but I always came up empty-handed. The options just didn’t seem to be there, so I gave up.
Two years ago, I decided to give it another try, and I was able to find something that I enjoy AND that I’m good at. I was finally able to help pay the bills. I even made enough money last summer to fully fund our first beach vacation. It felt so good to be able to contribute financially.
Shortly after, I noticed that I wasn’t feeling down and sad so much anymore. And then one day, it was gone. I realized that when I’m working, I get this feeling of accomplishment and joy. Seeing a deposit in the bank account because I earned it is a really great feeling for me, and I think that has been the main contributor to my healing.
I still struggle with anxiety attacks, but I don’t believe the two are related. I’m working on healing in that area as well.
