Helping women figure out what they’re good at and building a home business around it is one of my favorite things to do. I’ve said before that you can literally do anything to make money online, and today we’re going to look at six different creative business ideas you can start at home that don’t require a lot of money to start.
In my article, 28 Lucrative Home Businesses for Stay-at-Home Moms, I cover mostly technical business ideas with a few creative ones mixed in. I’m going to focus on those today for my creative readers who desire to start a home business.
Sell Your Crafts on Etsy
You can sell any handmade item or digital product in an Etsy store. If you are crafty or great at designing printables, an Etsy store can be a great place to sell your things. You don’t have to have a lot of overhead expenses when first starting. Just make a few pieces and list them on Etsy. It costs 20 cents to list an item.
Making and selling printables can be a fantastic way to earn money selling on Etsy, which has zero overhead, making it the perfect creative business for no start-up money. You can use online tools like Canva or Picmonkey. My personal favorite is Canva. It’s where I created my budget binder and all the printables and graphics you see on my site. If you’re going to use Canva, I suggest getting Canva for Business, which is only $12.95 a month. Worth it.
Sell Your Photos Online
Businesses and blogs are constantly looking for stock photography to feature in their posts and ads. If you are great with a camera, selling your photos to these businesses can be a great way to earn a living. Read this post to learn how. Did you know that you can sell your photos on Etsy?
If you love to write (and even if you don’t) selling ebooks can be a great way to earn extra cash or even make a full-time income. You can write the book or hire a ghostwriter to write it for you, and sell it on Amazon. I found this post that explains how you can start making money selling ebooks part-time.
Start a Craft Blog
This one is probably my favorite; although I haven’t earned enough from my blog to call it a business yet, I do enjoy it. There are many different ways to earn money from a blog.
Sell your own physical products
Create and sell your own digital products
Write an ebook and sell it on your blog
Provide freelance services
Create and sell an online course
I use Squarespace for my blogging platform, and I highly recommend it. Here is a free course to get you started with your own Squarespace blog.
My favorite craft blogger earns over $100,000 a month (yes, that’s per MONTH) doing what she loves to do, which is to teach others how to DIY crafts at home. Check her out for inspiration at JenniferMaker.com.
Virtual Interior Decorator
If you love to decorate but want to stay home, virtual interior decorating could be a great business. You can do everything in your own home, right from your computer.
Virtual interior decorating consists of looking at photos and measurements of a space someone wants to decorate, finding the perfect colors and items online, and telling the client where he/she can find these items.
You can take it a step further and become an affiliate of the businesses where these items are found and earn a commission from those businesses on top of the fee you’re already charging your client at no extra charge to your client.
Vinyl Farmhouse Signs
This business idea requires a vinyl printer, or if you’re talented with a paintbrush, you could create these signs with paint. The vinyl printer can be pricey, but I’m including it here because the cost to make a farmhouse sign far outweighs the profit one could earn from one of these signs. Farmhouse signs are extremely popular right now. Here is a tutorial on how to make your own farmhouse sign with a vinyl printer.

The reason it excites me so much is because I spent years trying to find the perfect business to start at home, and when I finally found it, everything changed. I’m able to work for myself from my home. It just doesn’t get any better than that.
