how i save money by doing my hair and nails at home

I love to find ways to save money, but I also like to have my hair and nails done. We all like to look our best, but that can really come at a price. Getting your nails done every 2-3 weeks and your hair done every 6-8 weeks can really add up. I personally have never made going to the salon a priority in our budget, but I have figured out a way to do those things at home for a fraction of the price. I save a TON of money this way!

Disclaimer — I don’t recommend this for everyone, especially doing your hair at home, but this is what I do to save money on doing my nails and coloring my hair. If you’re brave and are experienced with hair color this could be a great option for you, but if you try this and mess up your hair, I take no responsibility! Just had to throw that out there. :-) Do test strands before coloring your whole head!

Hair Color

I buy my hair color at Sally Beauty Supply, but you can also find it on Amazon. The brand I use is Wella Color Charm. I use the liquid bottles because the color seems to hold better than the cream, from my experience. I only color my hair for gray coverage, so I choose the color closest to my natural color, which is 7A. I don’t have a link for the color, but you can find it with a simple search on Amazon. You’ll also need some developer. I use this one of the same brand. If you decide to do this at home, PLEASE do test strands before coloring your whole head. Sometimes the color doesn’t turn out like the picture, so you’ll need to experiment.

Nails

For my nails, I use a gel system. I prefer using gel over regular nail polish because it lasts for up to three weeks. I always get frustrated with regular nail polish because it never lasts more than a day. I use Gelish and recommend getting the kit. It seems expensive at first, but if you like to get your nails done a lot, it’ll pay for itself after the first six weeks. I also recommend getting these for when it’s time to soak off the gel polish. You never, ever want to peel the gel polish off your nails. It will damage them.

Here’s a picture of my nails after using gel polish. They are my natural nails (no tips) shaped with a regular nail file.

This photo was taken the day after coloring my hair with Wella Color Charm 7A liquid. There are still some red undertones from when I colored my hair red.

So that’s how I save money doing my nails and hair at home. If I were to go to the salon and get my nails done every three weeks and my hair colored every eight weeks, it would cost me approximately $1350! It was definitely worth it for me to learn how to do this at home. I’d love to hear about how you save money on beauty in the comments below!
